An Important Message to the JSL Community

May 4, 2020

Dear JSL Community,

On the evening of May 3rd, the JSL Board held an online meeting to discuss the feasibility of holding a full or partial swim season this summer, given the incredibly difficult situation we are currently facing.

The Executive Committee had compiled a significant amount of information from both USA Swimming and the CDC for the Board to consider in making a decision. In addition, a financial document was presented by the treasurer detailing the expenses of having a partial season. There was a lot of discussion from all of the team representatives, the Executive Committee, and several Consultants to the Board concerning the difficulty of ensuring the health and safety of all swimmers, officials, and parents who take part in the 48 dual meets that were scheduled for 2020.

The Board voted to cancel the JSL Dual Meet Season, in any form, for 2020. No dual meet will be sanctioned by JSL in 2020. The 2020 JSL Championship had been canceled at the previous Board meeting. We sincerely hope that everyone understands and appreciates the difficulty of the decision to cancel the JSL Season for the first time since the League began in 1966.

This decision only affects the dual meets that are sanctioned by JSL. Individual teams are free to have learn-to-swim programs, hold individual team practices, or have other events at their home pools. Please be clear that JSL does not insure, sanction, supervise, or otherwise approve any of these. The Executive Committee strongly encourages all teams to strictly follow the various Coaching Certification, CDC, and USA Swimming guidelines to ensure that the health and safety of the swimmers and other participants is paramount.

Sincerely,

The Executive Committee of JSL

Chuck Fix (HM), President
Christina Meyer (ACAC), Vice-President
Kristin Wray (FCC), Secretary
Jeff North, Treasurer
Devin Creamer (LMST), Past-President

Dear JSL Community,

Last night the JSL Board held a special online meeting to discuss the feasibility of holding a full swim season and Championship meet this summer, given the incredibly difficult situation we are currently facing.

The Executive Committee had compiled a list of questions and suggestions that team representatives had submitted in the past week; each item was discussed by the entire Board. In addition, a financial document had been prepared by the treasurer detailing the JSL’s current expenditures, and outlining several possible scenarios and the costs of each.

Regarding the Championship meet scheduled at UVA, a key discussion item in this meeting and in past weeks has been the feasibility of holding such a large meet given the fact that UVA has banned group activities in their facilities through June 30th, and is subject to change. Another major consideration is reduced and possibly no sponsorship from Charlottesville businesses, which is vital for the financial health of the Championship meet.  The Championship meet is, by far, our most expensive undertaking in each season.

The Board voted unanimously to cancel the Championship meet, in any form, for 2020. No version of a Championship meet hosted by the JSL will be held.

Regarding having a shortened swim season this summer, there was a lot of discussion from all of the team representatives concerning the health and safety of all swimmers, officials, and parents who take part in meets. While this is of paramount importance to the board, some teams felt it was more prudent to wait on a decision to cancel, in order to see what direction and guidance will be issued in the coming month.

In a split vote, the Board voted not to cancel the season at this time. It is anticipated that further deliberations will take place at the next meeting on May 3rd when more information of what lies ahead of us is available.

We sincerely hope that everyone understands and appreciates the difficulty of the decision to cancel Champs for the first time in 54 years.

Sincerely,

The Executive Committee of JSL

Chuck Fix (HM), President
Christina Meyer (ACAC), Vice-President
Kristin Wray (FCC), Secretary
Jeff North, Treasurer

The JSL Executive Committee is aware of some concerns regarding the upcoming summer swim season because of the coronavirus (COVID-19).  The current CDC position regarding the future is "... At this time, it is not known whether the spread of COVID-19 will decrease when weather becomes warmer."  So, it is not possible to predict what the situation will be in the late spring and summer.

Preparation for the upcoming JSL season started in January and must continue in the coming months if we will be having a normal season.  Provided there are no dramatic changes in the status of this outbreak, the pre-season Board meetings will occur as scheduled.  JSL Rules and Regulations permit virtual meetings if that were to become necessary.

Please know that the safety of JSL swimmers has always been the top priority of the Board.  The full JSL Board will decide what the future of the upcoming JSL season will be as soon as the future becomes clearer.  That information will then be forwarded to the individual teams through the Team Reps and posted on the Home Page of jsl.org.

Decisions regarding individual team practices, gatherings, social events, etc. are determined by the individual teams. We trust that each team will make those decisions with the safety of the participants as the primary concern.

We are well aware of how much JSL means to the swimmers as well as their parents.  Every effort will be made to have another successful and safe JSL season.

Sincerely,

JSL Executive Committee
